We have been liaising closely with the venues, with our suppliers and with Table Tennis England, who in turn must comply with Sport England governance.
Our venues are being incredibly flexible, trying to help, but they need confirmation that we are working in accordance with the guidelines of our sporting governing body and that our sport has reached Covid Stage 5 – ‘Full play and spectating in place’.
As we know, we are not there yet, and at this point only planning to move to Stage 4 (local leagues able to re-start) from September 1, 2020.
At the moment, the advice we are receiving suggests that it is unlikely that table tennis will recommence ‘full play’ this calendar year. So, it will be January 2021 at the earliest.
We continue to plan on your behalf, considering one day events in a ratings format to enable a controlled resumption of play when possible to do so. But our numbers (constituting a ‘mass gathering’) and our age group means that we must demonstrate that stringent controls are in place, enabling a safe competitive environment.
I am so sorry to have to share this news with you. I hope you are all keeping safe and well, and we will resume play as soon as we can.
Warmest regards, Jan Johns
